The judicial act because it created the Supreme Court
Carbon has been known of and used by humans since ancient times, but it was formally recognized as an element in the 18th century. The credit for discovering the element carbon is usually given to Antoine Lavoisier in 1789.
Various European scientists showed that charcoal, diamond and graphite are composed of the same element in the 18th century but carbon has been known in its various forms since antiquity. For more about this history please see the wikipedia article about carbon.
How many known elements were there in 1789? Short answer = more than 63 Longer answer = In the 1860's Mendeleev organized the 63 known elements. After this organization there was a boom of new elements being discovered (because we now knew what we were looking for). I'm sure further research would turn up a better answer. Prehistoric artists used carbon found in soot, ash, and charcoal. In 1786, the French scientists Claude Louis Berthollet, Gaspard Monge and C. A. Vandermonde proposed the name "carbone" (Latin carbonum) for the element. It was previously identified in steel by René A. F. de Réaumur (1722), in graphite by Carl Wilhelm Scheele, and as diamond by Antoine Lavoisier (1772).
Well, honey, silicon got its name from the Latin word "silex," which means flint. Some smartypants scientist decided to call it that because silicon is commonly found in rocks and minerals. So, there you have it, the origin of the name silicon - simple as that.
