Mercury expands on heating.so at noon when the sun is overhead in the thermometer the Mercury expands and pushes the index down. And then the alcohol which is half filled in the maximum tube rises.then the max.temp is taken.

One type of minimum-maximum thermometer consists of a U-shaped glass tube, which is designed to read the correct temperature at both ends of the enclosed column of liquid. There is a (metal) block at each end of the liquid column that is pushed along as the column advances. When the column retreats, the block stays behind - marking the highest and/or lowest temperature. These metal blocks can then be reset by pulling it back to the end of the liquid column using an accompanying magnet.

There are digital thermometers that remember high and low values.

The "analog" Min-Max thermometers have a small marker that gets pushed into place by the liquid in the thermometer (Mercury or an alcohol mixture). These remain in place even after the liquid has expanded (for minimum range) or contracted (for maximum range).

The mercury-in-glass or mercury thermometer was invented by physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in Amsterdam (1714).[1] It consists of a bulb containing mercury attached to a glass tube of narrow diameter; the volume of mercury in the tube is much less than the volume in the bulb. The volume of mercury changes slightly with temperature; the small change in volume drives the narrow mercury column a relatively long way up the tube. The space above the mercury may be filled with nitrogen gas or it may be at less than atmospheric pressure, a partial vacuum.

How does a U-shaped thermometer work?

Otherwise known as a Maximum - Minimum thermometer.Records the max and min temperature, at the position of a couple of small metal riders.A u-tube, each arm a few inches long. The lower part of the U contains mercury, and there will be a small metal bit (a rider) above the mercury in each arm. One of the arms is otherwise filled with alcohol, and the other arm will have a vacuum or alcohol under low pressure. As the alcohol arm expands, it will depress the mercury column in that arm, and thus elevate the mercury column in the other. The riders are pushed up their respective tubes by the mercury as appropriate. When the temperature changes and the mercury withdraws, the metal bits will remain in position, (by a weak magnet) thus recording the max (or min) temperature in that column. There is usually a small push button, which moves the weak magnet away from the columns, thus allowing the metal riders to fall to the top of the mercury columns. The temperature read at both ends of the mercury column (bottom of the riders) should be the same.

Trace out the algorithm Max Min on a data set containing atleast 8 elements?

Steps to perform MaxMin on a data set (2,4,6,3,8,1,9,7) are:(2,4,6,3) (8,1,9,7)((2,4)(6,3)) ((8,1)(9,7))In sublist (4,6), max is 6 and min is 4. Why use max for union and min for intersection?

Because they obey the same laws (specifically, de Morgan's Laws): -max(a,b) = min(-a,-b) and -min(a,b) = max(-a,-b). In theory, you could use max for intersection and min for union, too.
