When it rains, water can get in through the cracks in asphalt, rock, etc. Then that water freezes, which expands the size of the water. When it expands, it pushes the rock apart, thus causing erosion and weathering. =)

What is it called when rocks are broken down by water wind ice and heat?

The process of rocks being broken down by water, wind, ice, and heat is known as weathering. Weathering breaks down rocks into smaller pieces over time through physical or chemical means.

What is the weathering of the earth's surface called?

The weathering of the Earth's surface is called erosion. Erosion is the process by which soil and rock are removed and transported by wind, water, or ice.

What is another word for erosion?

Another word for erosion is weathering. Weathering is the process by which rocks and soil are broken down by natural elements such as water, wind, and ice.

Why does weathering speed up the process of erosion?

Weathering weakens the rocks and breaks them into smaller pieces, making them more susceptible to erosion. Weathering also creates loose material that can be easily transported by wind, water, or ice, accelerating the erosion process. Additionally, the products of weathering can act as abrasive agents, further contributing to erosion.

How is erosion different from weathering, and what specific processes does erosion involve that weathering does not?

Erosion is the process of moving weathered material from one place to another, while weathering is the breakdown of rocks and minerals in place. Erosion involves transportation of the weathered material by agents like water, wind, or ice, which weathering does not.

Is weathering the same as a erosion?

No it is not. Erosion is a constant state of wear on a subject by the same force.. where as weathering is the consistant battering of a subject by differnent forces..causing both to change is shape and form and texture.

What are the process that cause earths surface to wear down?

Weathering and erosion

Which process makes sediments weathering or erosion?

Erosion

Can ice cause weathering and erosion?

Yes, ice can cause weathering and erosion through a process called frost wedging. When water penetrates cracks in rocks and then freezes, it expands and exerts pressure on the rock, eventually causing it to weaken and break apart. Over time, this can lead to weathering and erosion of the rock.

What type of force is weathering and erosion?

Although the terms are frequently used together, weathering and erosion are uniquely different. Weathering is the physical, chemical and biotic breakdown of a substance and erosion is how it is carried off. Ice, water and wind contribute to the erosion process.

Are weathering and erosion the same process or opposites?

Weathering and erosion are related but distinct processes. Weathering refers to the breakdown of rocks and minerals at or near the Earth's surface, while erosion involves the transportation and removal of those weathered materials by natural forces like water, wind, or ice. Weathering prepares the material for erosion to take place.
