Well knowing first hand,

when lightning hits the ground in front of you it is like a white flash... there is really no detail. it actually reminds me of staring at the sun too long because al you really see is white blurry light. But on the other hand, if you are inside and lightning happens to strike outside in your yard it usually has more detail and you can see the different branches on the bolt. Of course it only lasts for a fraction of a second it is really amazing to see.

Does lightning only occur from cloud to ground?

Double ZapperYes. In fact, visible lightning usually comes up from the ground into the cloud! The lightning bolt is actually retracing a path of weak electricity that the cloud sent down as a sort of "feeler" sensing for the shortest path to take to the ground. So if you're in an open space during a lightning storm, and you feel your hair stand up from static electricity, you might want to run for cover!

When Lightning hits sand does it form a piece of glass in the shape of the lightning bolt itself?

yes, if you consider that the current flowing into the ground makes a fulgurite along its path of highest current density. What happens is that when lightning strikes the ground, the current flow follows pathways of least resistance. These pathways are the routes the high current is taking into "ground" to be neutralized, and the current heats the material through which it is flowing tremendously. It actually superheats and fuses it along pathways where high current is flowing. Eventually the current "thins out" as multiple pathways bleed off the moving charges. It is around the spot where the bolt struck the ground that the ground gets the most heating, as you'd expect.

How does the process of grounding occur during a lightning strike?

When lightning strikes a surface, it strikes it will all the energy that it contains and this causes it to heat up to very high temperatures, which in smaller objects can cause them to burn up. In a surface which has large area, this energy gets dissipated over the entire surface and the amount of heat per unit area gets considerably reduced. A lightning rod works on transferring this large amount of energy to the ground so that the heat energy can be dissipated harmlessly.

How does lightning and thunder occur?

Lightning occurs when electrical charges build up in the atmosphere, creating a difference in charge between the ground and the clouds. When this difference becomes too large, it discharges as a bolt of lightning. Thunder is the sound produced by the rapid expansion and heating of air around a lightning bolt.

Is lighting ground to sky or from sky to ground?

There is much confusion over the "up" or "down" motion of lightning bolts, but in most cases it is initiated by the flow of negative ions in clouds to a positively charged point at another point (cloud or ground). What is referred to as "lightning" is a luminous path of superheated air caused by repeated current flows from the ground and the air. In certain cloud types, the interaction of ice and water (and possibly the Earth's magnetic field) creates a surplus of negatively charged particles, usually near the bottom of the cloud. Where the ground and objects below have accumulated positive charges, an electric discharge can occur. This is preceded by "step leaders" moving down from the clouds and "positive leaders" moving up from the ground. Where these streams come in contact, the negative ions flow to the ground, followed by a return flow of positive ions. This can occur multiple times in the same lightning strike.

Can snow thunder toutch the ground?

If you're asking if lightning can reach the ground, even that which occurs during heavy "thundersnow", the answer is yes - it is lightning just like any other.

Does heat lightning touch the ground?

Heat lightning is a term used to describe lightning that is seen from a distant thunderstorm but is too far away for the accompanying thunder to be heard. It does not have its own unique characteristics and does indeed touch the ground like any other lightning strike.

What is lightning a form of?

Electricity. Lightning is a stream of electrons traveling between the clouds and the ground. It's just like static electricity shock, but much bigger.

What are the types of lightning flashes called?

There are several types of lightning:Cloud-to-ground lightning which includes bead lightning, ribbon lightning, Ssaccato lightning and forked lightningGround-to-cloud lightningCloud-to-cloud lightning which includes sheet lightning and heat lightningDry lightningRocket lightningPositive lightningBall lightningUpper-atmospheric lightning with exotic names like sprites, Bbue jets and elvesand there is more but i cant remember, go to wikipedia

What causes lightening during a thunderstorm?

what causes lightning is that the positive charge of the storm and the negative charge of the ground (or it could be the opposite) interact like a battery and the electricity discharges into the ground lightning can also go up from the cloud into the air but i don't know why that is

Does noise draw lightning?

Noise itself does not directly attract lightning. Lightning is typically attracted to tall objects like buildings, trees, and poles due to the difference in electric charge between the ground and the atmosphere. Lound sounds, however, can sometimes be produced by lightning strikes.

Why does lightning like trees?

Lightning is attracted to tall objects, like trees, because they provide a path of least resistance for the electrical current to travel to the ground. Trees contain moisture and are good conductors of electricity, making them a common target for lightning strikes during storms.
