In other words, it is the point in the moon's orbit that month that brings it as close to being in a straight line as it can get between the sun and the earth. It doesn't form a straight line every month, or there would be a solar eclipse every month. Solar eclipses are relatively rare, especially for a given location on earth's surface. Because you would literally have to stare very close to the sun's location in order to see the moon at the time of new moon, it is invisible to the naked eye. Of course, it is gloriously visible during a total solar eclipse, but it is extremely dangerous to observe such an eclipse without protective equipment.

The "powder" Armstrong was referring to is called "regolith". The regolith covers the entire surface of the moon. When they returned to the Lunar Module and took off their helmets, Armstrong and Aldrin noticed the smell of gunpowder, which came from the lunar dust on their suits.

As would be expected, the lunar surfaceis covered with rocks and craters. Most of the craters have craters within craters.
