Organic chemistry can be looked at as the study of the structure, properties, composition, reactions and preparation of hydrocarbons and their derivatives. These compounds may contain any number of other elements, including hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, the halogens as well as phosphorus, silicon and sulfur.

Organic substances will generally contain both carbon and hydrogen at their simplest forms, although even the basic functional groups will include oxygen.
