Nothing happens to sulfur when mixed with air. Nitrogen is part of the gas combination that makes up air. Neither reacts with water.

However,

When sulfur is burned in air the S turns to SO2 which is soluble in water and forms sulfurous acid. Similarly when N2 is present in a zone of high temperature it may combine with oxygen to form NOx a group of oxygen/nitrogen compounds which may react with water to produce nitrous acid. These compounds in water contribute to acid precipitation (rain or snow)

What happens when pollution mixes with the water in the air?

The teo most common pollutants that mix with water in the air are sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) These pollutants create acids with water. The combination is known as Acid Rain or Acid Precipitation.

What happens when water vapor is lighter than nitrogen or oxygen?

Water vapor is a gas so it is in the air. Nitrogen and nitrogen are in the air too, but there is more nitrogen than anything in the air. I believe it rises because it is lighter, like a balloon filled with helium.

Is the air we breathe compound or a mixture?

air is a mixture of elements (nitrogen, oxygen, trace amounts of other elemental gases) plus compounds (water vapor, nitrogen and sulfur oxides, CO2)

What is the pH of sulphur and nitrogen?

Sulfur is not soluble in water and it depends on the form the phosphorous takes as to what it will do in water, or air, for that matter. Liquid nitrogen does not have pH. pH is based on the measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in solution - there are no hydrogen ions in liquid nitrogen.

What is the other substance in the air that combines with sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide to form acid precipitation?

Carbon combines with sulfur and nitrogen in order to form acid precipitation.

What happens when air pollution gets into rivers?

Air pollution is generally acidic in nature, involving nitrogen and sulfur compounds that produce acid when dissolved in water, so when they wash out of the air in the rain, the result is known as acid rain. When acid rain gets into rivers, they acidify. This is harmful to fish.
