Greenhouse gases (GHG) are those gases which absorb solar radiation and re-radiate the heat into the atmosphere. The principal gases in this category are carbon dioxide and methane.

Human activities which lead to these emissions or decreased activity of GHG sinks are:

  • Burning of fossil fuels
  • Agricultural practices (cattle related methane emissions and loss of carbon sequestration in soil by modern tilling practices)
  • Reduction of forest cover
  • Methane leaks from oil and gas fields

Just keep doing what we are already doing will do that (e.g. burning lots of fossil fuels, heavy logging).

How are oceans directly affected by the increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

The increased concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere lead to ocean acidification, which can harm marine life and disrupt ecosystems.

Humans have greatly increased the level of what in the atmosphere?

Humans have greatly increased the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels for energy production, transportation, and industrial activities. This increase in carbon dioxide is a major contributor to global warming and climate change.

What process adds and removes gases from the atmosphere?

The process that adds gases to the atmosphere is volcanic activity, which releases gases such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. The process that removes gases from the atmosphere is photosynthesis, where plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
