AM means 'ante meridiem', before noon, and PM means 'post meridiem', after noon. They are widely used conventions in places where the 12-hour clock is in standard use. Where the 24 hour clock is used AM and PM are not necessary, because every hour of the 24 hour day is assigned a unique value.
