i would say earthquakes but there are more reasons

edit: Tidal waves are the byproduct of undersea plate tectonics. Subduction zones create large amounts of friction which then in turn create seismic waves which are transferred in to the surrounding sea water and take the form of fast moving waves in the open ocean. When the water becomes more shallow is when you see the classic images of a tsunami or tidal wave.

What is a giant ocean wave caused by an earthquake or a severe storm called?

A Tsunami, or tidal wave, or seismic sea wave may be caused by an earthquake. It is incorrect to refer to giant ocean waves caused by severe storms as tsunamis. Severe storms may cause giant ocean waves referred to as "Rogue Waves" - which are distinct from and NOT the same as Tsunamis.

Why are they no longer called tidal waves?

Tsunamis are not called Tidal waves anymore, as tsunamis are not affected by the tides. Tides do not affect how strong or tall the tsunamis are and that is why tsunamis are not commonly called tidal waves anymore because the word 'tidal' is misleading.

What is volcanic activity of the ocean floor can cause giant tidal waves called?

Volcanic activity on the ocean floor can cause giant tidal waves known as tsunamis. These waves are typically triggered by underwater volcanic eruptions or the collapse of volcanic islands, which displace large volumes of water. When the energy from the eruption or collapse is released, it generates powerful waves that can travel across oceans at high speeds, leading to significant coastal impact upon reaching land.

What measures intensity of tidal waves?

The intensity of tidal waves is typically measured using a scale called the "Tsunami Intensity Scale" or the "Tsunami Magnitude Scale." This scale measures the amplitude of the waves, the speed at which the waves are traveling, and the energy they carry. The higher the magnitude on the scale, the more intense the tidal wave is considered to be.

Some of the advantages of tidal wave energy?

Tidal waves are unpredictable. There is no way at present to capture their energy. We can capture the energy of tides and also of waves, but not of tidal waves.
