It is a magnet which moves metal around the scrap yard.

Scientific explanation = It s a big round magnet which is actually an electromagnet. This allows the magnet to be turned on then off. When turned on the electromagnet attracts any magnetic substances. This is why most cars are made of something magnetic! You can move this electromagnet around because it is a crane you pick stuff up move it and then drop it by turning the electromagnet off!

A scrapyard is a business where metal waste, scrapped vehicles, etc. are kept for recycling. The electromagnet is attached to a crane, and is used to attract metal scrap magnetically and move the metal to somewhere else, or to load onto a wagon.

Why can't we use a permanent magnet in a scrap yard?

You need to use an electromagnet in a scrap yard so that you can let go of the pieces of scrap that you pick up. A permanent magnet would not allow you to let go.

How do you call the magnet that is used to pick up cars in a scrapyard?

It is simply called a scrap magnet. Ohio Magnetics and Walker both manufacturer scrap magnets.

What happens to pieces of aluminum in a pile of scrap metal when an electromagnet nears the pile?

If the aluminum has iron attached to it it will be picked up by the magnet otherwise it will remain on the ground.

What can a scrap heap magnet pick up?

metals containing iron

How does a scrap heap magnet work?

Scrap heap magnets are basically electromagnets. Electromagnets are magnets that can be turned off and on. When they are turned on, the circuit inside them, (which normally consists of a battery, a switch, coiled wire and an iron rod) switches on. The iron rod inside the coils of wire is magnetized once the switch can be on or off. Mechanically an electromagnet is relatively simple. As soon as you apply a small electric current it becomes magnetized. The copper wire produces a magnetic field around the core just like any other magnet. The advantage is that it can be turned on or off. The only magnetic elements are iron, cobalt and nickel. This means that electromagnets can only attract those metals. They can also attract steel. This is because it is mainly made of iron. This is useful because it helps sort the metals into allocated locations. However they cannot pick up paper, wood or any other metal that is not magnetic, or made out of iron, cobalt and nickel. Scrap Heap magnets work by a very simple but effective circuit board which is in them. The circuit board includes: - A switch (To turn the electromagnet on/off) - A battery (To power the electromagnet so there is a current flowing through it) - A iron rod (This is the component that is magnetized.) - Coiled wire around the rod (the current) When a scrap heap magnet is turned on by the switch, the iron core is magnetized because of the current flowing though it due to the coiled wire and battery. This makes it magnetized and it is able to pick up any metals that are magnets and its able to place them in their designated areas in the scrap heaps.

What is a scrapyard magnet?

a scrap yard magnet is an electro magnet used to pick up bits of metal. this is used because it can drop the metal because it can be turned on and off

What are facts about the scrap yard magnet?

A scrapyard magnet is a large magnet that attracts materials such as colbolt, iron, nickel. It can be turned on and off, and when you turn off the magnet it drops all the scrap, it is taken by truck or train car and then it goes to a recycling plant.as it moves it holds scrap and takes it to another pile.

What is a scrap crane?

A scrap crane is a crane (mobile or EOT -electric overhead traveling) in a scrap yard most commonly steel scrap. The applicaton I use is a EOT crane with a magnet. It loads steel scrap into a ladle which goes into a electric arc furnace.

What type of magnet can be controlled by adjusting the flow of electric current such as might be used in a scrap yard to pick up and then drop large pieces of metal?

An electro magnet.

well basically anthing that is made out of metal and steel, will move on a scrap heap magnet.

Does steel attract a scrap heap magnet?

A scrap heap magnet attracts steel - but not steel with a high chromium or nickel content

Is it allege to take PC hard drive from a scarp yard?

If you mean is it illegal to take a hard drive from a scrap yard- it may be. The scrap in the scrap yard belongs to the scrap yard- like everything else there. Taking the property of someone else is called theft. However, it the operator of the scrap yard sells or gives the hard drive to you, you should be OK.

What type of things can be found at a scrap yard?

The types of things that can be found in a scrap yard depend on the type of scrap yard it is. Many scrap yards deal with just automotive scrap so one would find spare parts for cars there. Other scrap yards deal with just metals such as copper.

How does a scrap yard work?

A scrap yard works by opening the yard for people to drop off metal items. The person is paid per pound. The scrap yard hauls the metal to a different location and receives more money per pound.

How can the strength of a scrap heap magnet vary?

The strength of a scrap heap magnet vary depending on the strength of the current or number of "turns" in its primary coil. Increasing either or both of these makes the magnet stronger.
