In general speech, an eon can refer to a very long period of time.

In science, an eon is the largest division in the geologic time scale. An eon is subdivided into two or more eras and lasts around a billion years or so. In Earth's history there are four eons in total: Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic. We are currently in the Phanerozoic Eon.
