At the Mid Ocean Ridges (MOR), new crust is being created from the magma. The actual shape of this new crust is columnar basalt.

The MOR in the mid-Atlantic is well studied, and is responsible for the volcanic activity in Iceland and the Canary Islands.

The gap between the paired material crusts gradually expands, and is well matched by the consumption of crust at the subduction zones. It is considered that this cycle is driven by circulation of thermal cells in the magma. The ocean floors are all quite young.
