Amytal Sodium (amobarbital sodium) is a classified as an intermediate acting barbiturate. Barbiturates are nonselective central nervous system (CNS) depressants. In subhypnotic doses, they are also used as anticonvulsants. Barbiturates are subject to control under the Federal Controlled Substances Act. Amytal Sodium is a schedule II controlled substance indicating a (comparatively) high potential for abuse, misuse, addiction, dependence, and diversion.
According to its official prescribing information Amytal Sodium is FDA approved as a "sedative, a hypnotic, for the short-term treatment of insomnia, since it appears to lose its effectiveness for sleep induction and sleep maintenance after 2 weeks, and as a preanaesthetic." It has also been commonly used off-label as an anticonvulsant, for use in narcoanalysis*; and has been used in diagnosis of schizophrenia and for catatonic, negativistic, and manic reactions, but generally has been replaced by other agents.
*Narcoanalysis (or narcosynthesis) is a psychiatric procedure rarly preformed anymore is a involves the intravenous administration of one or more psychotropic drugs (most commonly an intervinious barbiturate such as sodium pentothal amobarbital sodium) which (in nearly all forms of narcoanalysis) causes the patient to enter into a highly sedated hypnotic state. In this state, the patient expieriences a significant loss of inhibition and the patient is more likely to divulge information, which would usually not be revealed in the conscious state. He or she may also divulge all his fantasies, personal wishes, impulses, instinctual drive, illusions, delusions, conflicts, misinterpretations, and so on. This is a different way of using these type of drugs compared to the typically archaic (and normally ineffective) ideal of using them as a form of truth surm. Other drugs used in narcoanalysis include amphetamines, other stimulants, psychedelics, benzodiazepines, and belladonna alkaloids. Also narcoanalysis is often applied to using medication, typically lorazepam, when treating people who are catatonic or have other serious medical problems.
Yes, Sodium Amytal is still manufactured. The original maker (Eli Lilly) seems to have stopped but Flynn Pharma still produce it, and produce Amytal's old friends Seconal and Tuinal.
Examples: sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium hydroxide, sodium sulfide, sodium acetate, sodium bromide, borax, etc.

Sodium Acetate is also known as Sodium Ethanoate.

Barbiturates are generally classified as ultra-short acting, short acting, intermediate acting, and long acting. Some trade and generic names: Amytal Sodium Butisol Sodium Luminal Nembutal Sodium Phenobarbital Seconal Sodium
Michael Ross Walker died from an injection of propofol, the same drug that killed Michael Jackson two years later. His father, actor Robert Walker, died of an apparent allergic reaction to sodium amytal given by his psychiatrist.

A drug that slows down the activity of the central nervous system is called a depressant. Examples of depressants are Xanax, Librium and Amytal.

If you go to Wikipedia and look up barbiturates you should be able to find a list of more/less all of them. However in terms of a list only listing the currently available barbiturates that is impossible to find. Most barbiturate lists you might find either leave out a number of drugs or were written in the 90's or around 2001 so they are not accurate. The most accurate barbiturate list I know of is from a paper on barbiturates so it is not a stand alone list. I can tell you the currently available barbiturates in The United States as of the time I am writing this (01/02/2012). Just in the last year two of the few remaining barbiturates still on the market are no longer available (both due to fairly uncommon situations, hopefully one of them will become available again. Barbiturates currently available- Luminal (phenobarbital) Nembutal (pentobarbital) Seconal (secobarbital) Butisol (butabarbital) Amytal Sodium (amobarbital sodium) Brevital Sodium (methohexital sodium) Butalbital (see below) Recently discontinued: Mebaral (mephobarbital) Pentothal (thiopental sodium) Technically not classified as a barbiturate (although some barbiturate lists do include it) however one of its primary active metabolites it phenobarbital. Mysoline (primidone) Barbiturate combination drugs- Donnatal (belladonna alkaloids/phenobarbital) Fioricet (butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine) Fiorinal (butalbital/aspirin/caffeine) Fioricet with codeine (butalbital/acetaminophen/caffeine/codeine) Fiorinal with codeine (butalbital/aspirin/caffeine/codeine)

Elvis died of several drugs, not only one. He died of approximately 14 drugs but to name a few: Codeine, Morphine, Quaaludes, Valium, Diazepam, Placidyl, Amytal, Nembutal, Carbrital.
Sodium chloride has two atoms in the formula unit (NaCl): sodium and chlorine.
Sodium metal is pure sodium and is made of sodium atoms.
