What is soil made of?

Soil is made up of a mixture of organic material and minerals. The organic matter comes from dead plants and many of the minerals come from the rocks underground. These rocks, which are part of the lithosphere, are referred to as bedrock. Because the plants grow on top of the soil and the rocks are found underground, soil is made up of layers.

If the soil has physical and chemical properties that are beneficial to plant growth, they are considered rich soils.

The physical properties include texture, structure (the way individual soil particles hold together) and drainage.

Chemical properties include the amount of plant available nutrients, pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC) which is a measure of how well the soil holds some nutrients, yet keeps those nutrients available to plants.

Both physical and chemical properties can usually be enhanced by adding organic matter to the soil.

The best type of soil is when it is loam, that is, it is rich and consisting of a mixture of sand and clay and decaying organic materials. This means that there is enough nutrients for the plants to "feed" on while water does not drain quickly or slowly. Old garden soil may be made healthier by adding some manure to it.
