iodine reacts with chlorine gas produces iodine trichloride

I + Cl2 -->ICl3

now you have to balance the equation and you get:

2I + 3Cl2--> 2ICl3

Note: iodine trichloride is a molecular compound and that is why they used a prefix on the chloride. Therefore iodine trichloride just means 1 iodine and 3 chlorines resulting in ICl3. Also because chlorine is a diatomic element it needs to have a subscript of 2.
