Ankara has a semi-arid continental climate due to its elevation and inland location, with cold, snowy winters, and hot, dry summers. Spring and autumn are mild and partially wet, and tend to be short transitional periods between summer and winter.

During the winter, temperatures are regularly below the freezing point 0 °C (32 °F), frequently reaching -10 °C (14 °F) during the night, but it rarely drops below -15 °C (5 °F). However, given the low levels of relative humidity and lack of winds due to the total absence of maritime influences, Ankara actually feels less cold during the winter than coastal cities such as Istanbul unless it is lower than -10 °C (14 °F).

During the summer, temperatures very frequently surpass 30 °C (86 °F) in July and August - but less so in June and September, and rarely above 35 °C (104 °F). Thanks to the low levels of relative humidity, the hot and dry summers are more comfortable than coastal regions of Turkey. Because of Ankara's high altitude and its dry summers, nightly temperatures in the summer months are cool. The temperature range between day and night during the summer exceeds 15 °C (59 °F).

Precipitation during the winter is almost exclusively as snow, which is also common in November and March. Sleet is common in late autumn and early spring, and often precedes snowfall. Rainfall occurs mostly during the spring and autumn. Rainfall is particularly sparse during the summer, taking the form of about one or two showers and/or thunderstorms each summer month. Ankara's annual average precipitation is fairly low at 415 millimetres (16 in) and is one of the driest places of Turkey, nevertheless precipitation can be observed throughout the year.
