The coldest day in New York City was February 9, 1934 when it was 15 below zero. If you look at the newspapers of that day, it says it was 14.3 below. This discrepancy has bothered weather buffs for years, who don't understand how -14.3 could round off to -15. Actually, the -14.3 was recorded at Battery Park, where New York's weather records were taken from 1871 to 1960; however, weather records were being taken at Central Park since 1869 but were not official because Battery Park's were the official records. At Central Park it was -15 on February 9, 1934, so when Central Park became New York's official weather station in 1961 and the Battery Park station was shut down, all the records changed into what had been recorded at Central Park all those years. Compare the highest temperature; 102.3 at Battery Park, but Central Park showed 106 that day.
