Technically, a volcano is a type of mountain.
Mountains are formed by two continental tectonic plates colliding. The compressing plates forms folds in the crust, and if no or a small amount of erosion has occurred to wear down these folds, they continue to rise and break to form a mountain, which build on top of each other and form mountain ranges. (Lots of mountains)
Volcanoes are formed by a continental plate and an oceanic plate colliding, where the denser oceanic plate undergoes 'subduction' and slips under the less dense continental plate. The heat and pressure from the oceanic plate causes uplifting of magma from the earth's mantle, which rises to the surface, therefore creating a volcano.
There has to be a crack in the crust so a volcano can form and for the magma to rise through, while mountains are the crumpling of two landmasses. However, volcanoes may also later become mountains if they become completely dormant and no more lava (magma ).
The name "Vulcan" was derived from Vulcanus, the Roman god of fire and volcanoes.
Llullaillaco is located on the border between Chile and Argentina in the Andes mountain range. It is one of the highest volcanoes in the world, reaching an elevation of approximately 22,110 feet (6,739 meters).
A massif is a large and compact group of mountains, while a mountain is a single, tall landform that rises above its surroundings.
An upwarped mountain is formed by the uplifting of large blocks of Earth's crust without significant faulting. In contrast, a fault-block mountain is created by the displacement of blocks along faults, causing some blocks to be uplifted while others are dropped down. Ultimately, the main difference lies in the processes that lead to the formation of these mountain types.
The main difference between a hill and a mountain is their height and size. Hills are smaller and lower in elevation than mountains. Additionally, mountains usually have a defined peak or summit, while hills may have a more rounded or flat top.
