The effect on coral during a hurricane is that some may be swept away and many ocean creatures eat coral and if there is no coral some of them might die. Coral is a type of plant and some of the nuitriants it provides will cause the plant to die.

They move with currents so they would be washed away in the same direction as the hurricane. If one were to want to swim in water previously infested with jellyfish after a hurricane would be the best time. Often wonder why Diane Nyad and others never thought of the timing not just the actual swim itself as they sought to swim from Cuba to the keys.
