Amethyst is a gemstone, a variety of violet Quartz with the chemical formula is SiO2.

Because it has a hardness of seven on the Mohs Scale, amethyst is suitable for use in jewelry.

Due to its crystal quantity and relative rarity, larger samples can broach several hundred dollars.

Up to 18th century amethyst was included in the cardinal, or most valuable gemstones. However since the discovery of extensive deposits in locations such as Brazil it has lost most of its value.

Collectors look for depth of color, possibly with red flashes if cut conventionally.[11] The highest grade amethyst (called "Deep Russian") is exceptionally rare and therefore its value is dependent on the demand of collectors when one is found. It is however still orders of magnitude lower than the highest grade sapphires or rubies (Padparadscha sapphire or "pigeon's blood" ruby).

The principal special property of quartz is that it is piezo-electric. That is if you apply a voltage to two opposing faces, the crystal will change shape; and vice versa.

This is the device that in your phone/alarm clock/microwave that goes peep peep peep.

Small pieces of quartz are shaped so that they operate (vibrate) at your target frequency, be it for a watch alarm, or a GPS receiver.

Other materials may also be used for this purpose, but quartz is easily fabricated.

p.s. Your bones are also piezoelectric, and the electrical signals given out by the stresses put on the bone, will aid in shaping the bone to best respond to that stress. Very clever!
