Waves pounding the shoreline can make cracks. The cracks then gradually get larger and turn into a small cave. When the cave wears through the headland, an arch forms. Further erosion causes the arch to collapse, leaving the pillar of hard rock standing away from the coast-the stack. Eventually, erosion will cause the stack to collapse, leaving a stump.
The fine sediment left behind when a flood recedes is called silt. Silt consists of particles smaller than sand and is often deposited on floodplains as the water recedes.

When a volcano collapses, it can form a crater or caldera. A crater is a bowl-shaped depression at the top of the volcano, while a caldera is a much larger depression that can form when the center of the volcano collapses. Both features can result in a large, empty space left behind by the volcanic activity.
