a lone calcium atom has a charge of zero, as it posesses 20 protons (charge of +1) and 20 electrons (charge of -1)

when calcium is dissolved, or reacts with another chemical, it forms an ion, losing 2 electrons and hence has a charge of +2. that is to say, it has a valency of 2+
