There are most likely multiple answers to this question. This is the global warming route. Many of the things on Earth produce CO2 and other greenhouse gasses (like cows producing methane or cars producing carbon monoxide!). And these gasses are lighter than air so naturally they travel upward to the higher parts of the atmosphere. This is where the sun's heat super heats these gasses and the heat is trapped in the atmosphere. This heats up the rest of the Earth, causing changes in weather patters, increased ocean surface temperatures, melting of glaciers and other bodies of ice in addition to others. There used to be a natural defense system to this, plants. But development is causing these natural defenses to be destroyed. So less of these gasses are being converted back into oxygen.

Nitrogen makes up 78% of the Earth's atmosphere.
Nitrogen has made up the largest portion of Earth's atmosphere for most of Earth's history. It currently makes up about 78% of the atmosphere.
About 50% of the sun's radiation that reaches Earth's atmosphere is absorbed by the Earth's surface. The remaining energy is either reflected back to space or absorbed by the atmosphere.
