∙ 6y agoSlate has a long history for being used on roofs. It is quarried, will cleave into thin sheets, and is durable to all weathers. Slate can also be used in construction - many Welsh villages in a slate quarrying area are built from Welsh slate - the walls and the roofs - even slabs fixed upright to form garden fences. Other areas of Britain also produce slate. There is a lot of waste in slate, witness the huge mountains of dumped bits of slate. Some of this waste slate can be used to build fireplaces. Or even turned into souvenirs for tourists, or as name or house number plates to be fixed on the wall near the front door.
