The space between two air masses is referred to as a front. Fronts are categorized by which kind of air mass, warm or cold, is replacing the other. +++ IT's not really a "space" between the air masses - that would be a vacuum! Rather, it's a somewhat diffuse boundary.
Warm air masses are less dense than cold air masses because warm air molecules have more energy and are more spread out, leading to lower pressure. Cold air masses are denser because cold air molecules are closer together and have less energy, resulting in higher pressure.
When two cool air masses cut off a warm air mass from the ground, a stationary front forms. Stationary fronts occur when the boundary between two air masses stalls and neither one advances. This can lead to prolonged periods of cloudy, rainy weather.
Tornadoes are commonly associated with cold fronts, where a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass. The contrast in temperature and humidity between the two air masses creates instability in the atmosphere, which can lead to the development of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.
A tropical air mass typically causes hot and humid weather. This air mass forms over warm tropical regions and carries high levels of heat and moisture, leading to sultry and sticky conditions when it moves into an area.
