[1] Alkaline tolerant trees are acacia, box elder, eucalyptus, and locust. [2] Alkaline tolerant shrubs are callistemon, correa, pittosporum, podocarpus, spirea, and viburnum. [3] Alkaline tolerant plants are acanthus, bellflower, clematis, dianthus, flax [especially blue and purple toad], geranium [especially bigfoot], monkshood, oregano, pasqueflower, salvia, saxifrage [especially heartleaf], soapwort, stonecress, and yarrow. [4] Alkaline soils tend to be high in calcium and low in iron. The type of weeds that establish easily can be an indicator of acidic or alkaline soil. For example, chicory and Queen Anne's lace [both of which make good pressed flowers] are alkaline tolerant.

What is chalky soil?

Chalky soils are also known as basic soils. These soils are soft. This is the reason that they can break down so easily. They are also alkaline based. This makes them a bad type of soil for plants. Alkaline based soils can keep plants from absorbing iron. Chalky soils are also very draining. They hold little water and tend to dry out quickly. For this reason, they are also considered fertile, even though they are not beneficial to plants.
