The main criteria is that the plant must love heat and high humidity but also must be tolerant of extreme frigid temperatures when the seasons change. In Michigan, the temperatures range from a low of around -2F with wind chills down to -30F in the winter and they get as high as +100F with near 100% humidity.

Moss can grow on colder humid climates such as some warmer areas in Iceland, a cloud forest, and the Hoh Temperate Rainforest in Washington. In Malaysia the grass is much longer than the grass in Mongolia. Vines also grow by climbing on trees and plants to capture moisture from the air and sunlight. In the mornings in a rainforest the air is usually foggy from all of the moisture in the air condensing during the cooler nights. In the Atacama Desert ( the second driest desert in the world) some of the plants that grow near the coast depend on the morning fog moisture from the Pacific Ocean to capture water instead of slade pending on rainwater which it almost never rains.
