∙ 10y agoWhen a heavily silted river reaches a large flat area at its mouth, a process of deposition (dropping of silt) takes place due to a slowing of the water flow. The deposited silt blocks and diverts the main channel, forming several smaller channels, which may also be blocked, split and diverted on occasion. So a delta may be fed by a single river, but form many channels as it flows into the sea.
