Scientists' pay, in general, gets higher with how many significant degrees they have, the quality of the work the do, and the degree of specialization they can provide. Generally scientist working to provide real world results (better medicine, machines, food, etc.) are more valuable to industry than researchers in esoteric areas (catastrophe theory in the flight of moths)
