Hydrogen makes up 75% of the universe's known matter. Stars are almost entirely made of hydrogen gas that is compressed in the centre of the star to such gigantic pressure that the temperature rises to such an extent that hydrogen atoms fuse together forming helium atoms. This process of 'atomic fusion' releases enormous amounts of energy - sufficient to keep stars emitting energy in the form of heat, light and radiation for millions of years. Our sun, being a typical star, is fuelled by this atomic fusion thanks to it being made almost entirely of hydrogen, providing us with all our energy needs, and providing energy for plants to grow and produce their own food through photosynthesis, and therefore, as we eat plants (or animals that eat plants) it provides every material thing we need to survive. Therefore, without hydrogen our sun would not exist, and so neither would we.
