Particulate from coal fired power plants and volcanic eruptions has a slightly cooling effect on the climate. This particulate typically settles out in one to three years. CO2, on the other hand, tends to linger on average closer to a thousand years before it is reabsorbed.

Think of the additional CO2 as adding a blanket on a cold night. You are not instantly warmer with the new blanket, it takes time for your body heat to warm up the bedding. The same holds true for our atmosphere. We expect the climate to continue to change for a long time to come as a result of what we have already done--much less what we will continue to do. We are currently adding more blanket (heat trapping carbon dioxide) all the time.

CO2 levels are almost 400 parts per million now, and they will exceed 500 ppm by 2050 at the present rate, which is less than 40 years from now. If we can significantly reduce our consumption of fossil fuels by 2050, anthropogenic (human induced) climate effects should level off by 3050. If we continue burning coal and oil at the same rate, we should expect climate change to reverberate through ensuing millenia.
