Yes, there is such a thing and yes, it's caustic....it's also known as 'lye' and is THE most essential ingredient in soap making....no sodium hydroxide, no soap. It's that simple.

Both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide are known as lye and are used to make soap.

Once lye has saponified oils and the resulting soap is left to 'cure' - usually for up to 6 weeks - the lye is no longer present.

NaOH, lye or Sodium Hydroxide can be purchased for food grade use (baking pretzels, bagels, etc.) through Amazon in pellet form. 3% is the point where NaOH becomes corrosive. I use 1 US oz to one quart of water. Using purified drinking water is always best minding the contents of the water. It is always better to have only the chemicals you want in Chemistry. Make sure to use proper eye protection and gloves. NaOH can be nasty stuff but there is no better pretzel. I am not sure what the mail order laws are in Australia but be careful NaOH is used for making many illegal substances as well, many of which are on government watch lists.
