Where is lava located?

Lava is molten rock, and if one was looking for it, one should look around an active volcano. There are some hazards for the collector of a lava sample one should be aware of, however. One would be well advised to dress for the occasion and use a great deal of care. It can be extremely hot, so insulated clothing or even a fire suit would be necessary. Be careful to avoid stepping in the wrong place. Sometimes lava flows form a cooler coating on top which looks solid but which can break through if one puts one's weight on it. Toxic gases are a product of volcanic action. Wear a respirator. And molten rock is really hot. Use a long scoop of some kind to grab a sample.

Lava is typically found beneath the Earth's surface in magma chambers and is then expelled during volcanic eruptions onto the surface. It can also be found in lava tubes, which are tunnels formed when the outer shell of flowing lava solidifies while the molten lava inside continues to flow.
