Water vapor (H2O) and methane (CH4) are both potent greenhouse gases, but by sheer volume carbon dioxide (CO2) has a greater overall effect. H2O tends to be self regulating, literally falling out of the atmosphere every time it rains. The concentration of it varies in response to other things. Carbon dioxide and methane, however, linger in the atmosphere for extended periods of time, gradually pushing up earth's temperature.

What is the primary gas in the atmosphere responsible for the greenhouse effect?

Water Vapor is the gas that is largely responsible for the natural greenhouse effect that has warmed the earth for millions of years.Carbon dioxide is the gas that is largely responsible for the present accelerated greenhouse effect that is causing global warming.

Which gas is primarily responsible for causing the greenhouse effect?

Although water vapor is the most abundant greenhouse gas, the heat trapping gas that has been increasing most recently is carbon dioxide, and research indicates this gas is the one primarily responsible for measured increases in earth's average temperature.

What gas is responsible for the greenhouse effect during global warming?

The gas which we can do most to prevent, and the one that is causing the increase in temperatures, is carbon dioxide.

Which gas is mainly responsible for the greenhouse effect?

The greenhouse effect contains two different components: the natural greenhouse effect, and the enhanced greenhouse effect that results from human activities and is the cause of global warming.Water vapour is the most plentiful greenhouse gas and is mainly responsible for the natural greenhouse effect that maintains the world at a comfortable temperature suitable for human existence. Carbon dioxide also plays an important part in this natural greenhouse effect.Carbon dioxide is mainly responsible for the enhanced greenhouse effect. In this case, water vapour plays only a minor part as an enhancer, because the atmospheric concentration of it will increase if the temperature rises for other reasons, then causing a further increase in temperatures.

How water vapour as a greenhouse gas contributes to the greenhouse effect?

Water vapour is a greenhouse gas that traps heat rising from the surface of the earth. In doing so it contributes to the natural greenhouse effect.

Which is the common greenhouse gas in the atmosphere?

The most common greenhouse gas responsible for the natural greenhouse effect is water vapour. Man has no control over its levels. When it gets too high, it falls as rain. The most common greenhouse gas responsible for the accelerated greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide (CO2), the high levels of which we are responsible for. CO2 is having the largest effect on the recent increases in global temperature.

Is the main atmospheric gas responsible for the greenhouse effect carbon dioxide?

The normal greenhouse effect which keeps the earth warm enough for life is caused largely by water vapour, with a small effect from carbon dioxide and methane. However, the greenhouse gas responsible for the present enhanced greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide, yes.

What two elements are most responsible for causing the greenhouse effect?

Carbon and Oxygen. Together they make Carbon Dioxide (CO2), the greenhouse gas that is causing global warming.

What is the common greenhouse gas?

Water vapor is actually the most common greenhouse gas. However as it plays little part in global warming, and it doesn't stay long in the atmosphere (It is constantly falling as rain) it is not classed as a dangerous greenhouse gas. It contributes to the natural greenhouse effect which keeps the earth comfortably warm.Carbon dioxide is the Most common greenhouse gas that contributes most to the accelerated greenhouse effect and so to global warming.

Is it true that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas?

The most common greenhouse gas for the natural greenhouse effect is water vapour. Man has no control over its levels. When it gets too high, it falls as rain. The most common greenhouse gas responsible for the accelerated greenhouse effect is carbon dioxide (CO2), the high levels of which we are responsible for. Is carbon dioxide a greenhouse effect?

No, carbon dioxide (CO2) is NOT an effect of the greenhouse effect. It is one of the causes. With other greenhouse gases it is responsible for the natural greenhouse effect, and the extra levels of CO2 from burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, are causing the enhanced (or accelerated) greenhouse effect which is why global warming is happening.

Which gas is responsible for the run-away greenhouse effect on Venus?

The atmosphere of Venus is composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide. This is the same greenhouse gas that we have on earth. On Venus is is causing a runaway effect that has boiled the oceans dry.
