∙ 15y agoThe most damaging earthquake in recorded history took place in Tangshan, China. At 4 a.m. on July 28, 1976, a tremor lasting less than a minute destroyed 89 percent of homes and 78 percent of industrial buildings. The quake registered 8.2 on the Richter scale (This scale, which measures the magnitude of an earthquake, has graded steps beginning with 1 and ending with 10; each step is about 60 times greater than the preceding step.). Although Chinese officials reported 255,000 deaths, international observers estimate the true total to be 750,000, that is 75 percent of the entire population of Tangshan.

∙ 12y agoBy destructive, we do not take largest, but the one with most human effects. Naturally, with the Indian plate colliding with the Asian Plate, this is the site of major earthquakes, and as these regions are also heavily populated, the destruction is large.
On 23 January 1556 in the Shaanxi province, China, an earthquake killed more than 830,000 people. The 1976 Tangshan earthquake, with death toll estimated to be between 240,000 to 655,000, is believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll.
[BTW In New Zealand's Fiordland, a deep earthquake of about magnitude 8 was barely felt because few folk live in the locale, and it was a deep one.]

No, the S waves do, they are the most destructive, because they have a bigger ratio of Antinodes and nodes. AKA Destructive interference.
Yes it was very near the epicentre of the earthquake
In Chile in 1960, a 9.5 on the Richter scale
You can feel it because the waves of the earthquake are very destructive depending on the type of earthquake. The wave you might be feeling is the last wave of the earthquake which is the slowest, but the most powerful. Hope this helped! :)
the worlds most dangorus earthquake was in south America it hit a 9.2 on the rickter scale
tsunami
California
The most destructive earthquake in US history was the Prince William Sound earthquake. This earthquake did extensive damage across the Gulf of Alaska.
Destructive. Destructive means destroying and constructive means to make something. An earthquake is both destructive and constructive.
A strong earthquake can be very destructive.

An earthquake in some sense is both constructive and destructive.
the ring of fire
No. It is neither the most powerful nor most destructive (in terms of number of deaths). The most powerful earthquake ever was the Valdivian / Great Chilean Earthquake of 1960 (9.5 on Richter scale) and the most destructive was the Shaanxi, China earthquake of 1556 which supposedly killed 850 thousand people. Today's earthquake in comparison was 8.9 on the Richter scale and so far 300 people have been confirmed dead and 500 more missing.
Easily the world's worst Earthquake.
