At some point, most of us have heard that water spins down a drain in different directions depending on which hemisphere we happen to be in. The fact is, the Coriolis force (an apparent force as a result of the Earth's spin) has virtually nothing to do with which direction water spins as it empties down a drain. Although this force is "real" and does have an affect on other large, long lived systems that travel great distances (such as hurricanes, high and low pressure systems, and long range artillery shells), water draining from toilets, sinks, and bathtubs are rendered virtually immune from its affects. The Coriolis force is much too weak to have any affect on such small, short lived rotating bodies of water under normal conditions.

What way do tornado turn in the southern hemisphere?

Tornadoes in the Southern Hemisphere generally rotate in a clockwise direction due to the Coriolis effect, which deflects air to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This causes the circulation pattern of tornadoes to rotate in the opposite direction compared to tornadoes in the Northern Hemisphere, which rotate counterclockwise.

Which way do currents move in the northern hemisphere southern hemisphere?

In the Northern Hemisphere, ocean currents generally move in a clockwise direction, while in the Southern Hemisphere, they move in an anti-clockwise direction. This is due to the Coriolis effect, which is caused by the Earth's rotation and influences the direction of moving objects.

What way does a typhoon spin clockwise or counter-clockwise?

A typhoon in the northern hemisphere rotates counter-clockwise, in contrast to a typhoon in the southern hemisphere which rotates the other way (i.e., clockwise) as explained by the Coriolis effect.BR

Is it true in December the shortest daytime is in the southern hemisphere?

Yes, it is true. In December, which is summer in the southern hemisphere, the tilt of the Earth causes the southern hemisphere to be tilted towards the sun. This results in longer days and shorter nights in the southern hemisphere during this time of the year. Conversely, the northern hemisphere experiences its shortest daytime and longest nighttime in December.

Which way do winds rotate in a tropical depression?

In the Northern Hemisphere, winds in a tropical depression rotate counterclockwise. In the Southern Hemisphere, they rotate clockwise. This rotation is due to the Coriolis effect caused by the Earth's rotation.

Why does water go down the drain one way?

Contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with the latitude or the Coriolis effect. Toilets and sinks drain in the directions they do because of the way water is directed into them or pulled from them. The Coriolis effect is the reason why hurricanes rotate clockwise in the southern hemisphere, and counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere. But you need a very large amount of moving air and water for it to take effect.

Why does water swirl in a clockwise direction when going down a drain?

The direction in which water swirls down a drain is determined by the Coriolis effect, which is caused by the rotation of the Earth. In the Northern Hemisphere, water tends to swirl clockwise due to this effect, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it swirls counterclockwise. However, the Coriolis effect is very weak on small scales, so factors such as the shape of the drain and the way the water enters it can also influence the direction of the swirl.

What way does the water turn when the plug is taken out and why?

Water drains counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere due to the Coriolis effect, caused by the Earth's rotation. However, for small-scale drains like sinks and bathtubs, other factors like the shape of the drain and the way the water was initially moving play a more significant role in determining the direction of rotation.

Which way does it drain in northern hemisphere?

Counter clockwise.

Does water drain counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere?

That is a myth. Although cyclonic storms tend to rotate the way you describe, water vortexes do not. The particular shape and configuration of the drain, as well as the initial conditions of the swirl, play a much greater role in determining which way the vortex rotates. Although there is such a thing as coriolis, you can't observe it on anything smaller than a storm system. The idea that water spins one way or the other when going down the drain is an urban legend.

Is there a way you can cut the world in half?

Yes and it's the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere

Which way does a toilet flush in the southern hemisphere?

The toilet is too small a scale for water to certainly flush in one direction or the other because of the hemisphere they can, in fact, flush both ways. However hurricanes will rotate clockwise in the northern hemisphere and anit-clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

Which hemisphere has more are covered by water?

The Western Hemisphere (west longitude) has more water than the Eastern Hemisphere (east longitude), which has more land area. Asia, most of Europe, most of Africa, Australia, and about 70% of Antarctica comprise the land of the Eastern Hemisphere, compared to two continents (Americas) for the Western. The Eastern and Western hemispheres roughly split the Pacific Ocean, plus the Western Hemisphere contains practically all of the Atlantic Ocean. The comparison is about the same if the alternate convention is used, in which the eastern hemisphere is defined as between 20°W and 160°E.(Because of the grouping of the major continents, the southern hemisphere has much more water and the northern hemisphere has much more land.)

Are the sun's rays striking the Northern or Southern hemisphere the most during the summer?

well if you say it that way, it depend which hemisphere you live in. We live in the northern hemisphere, so the sun rays strike to the southern hemisphere.

Does tropical storm spin the other way?

The spin is counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

Are there more stars in the southern hemisphere?

Yes, there are more visible stars in the southern hemisphere than in the northern hemisphere because the southern hemisphere has fewer large cities and less light pollution, which allows for better visibility of stars. Additionally, the southern hemisphere has the center of the Milky Way galaxy, which contains more stars than the outer regions where the northern hemisphere is situated.

Would the tropic of Capricorn be found in the southern hemisphere or northern hemisphere?

The Tropic of Capricorn is in the southern hemisphere; the Tropic of Cancer is in the northern hemisphere. The way to remember is at the time of year when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, the sun was in the constellation of Capricorn back when the tropics were named.
