Native Americans lived in the area around Mount Shasta at least 7,000 years ago. It was the native tribes who "discovered" this mountain, and they had their own names for it. Beyond that, it is possible that Spanish explorers, who were active in many areas of California (though mostly the south) were the first Europeans to see this volcano.
