Why do earthquake occur?

Earthquakes are, basically, caused by the sudden release of pressure that has built up in the under-laying rock strata. This sudden release sends shock ways radiating out from the epicentre, that shakes buildings and can cause much damage and loss of life.

Underground there are these levels of ground called tech tonic plates. When one of the tech tonic plates moves and bumps into the other one they both slide up creating a crack in the ground a shake.

It result from the moving of rock deep under the ground. This movement is caused by the rubbing of one plate into another. The plates have jagged edges, and so when they rub against each other, they get stuck. Since plates constantly move, the plates that are stuck create great tension, and when they are finally free, a huge amount of energy is released. Shock waves move from focus in all directions, and it causes the earth to vibrate.

Earthquakes occur due to movement of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface. When these plates slide past, collide into, or pull apart from each other, it generates seismic waves which result in an earthquake. The release of pent-up energy from the Earth's crust leads to shaking of the ground.
