As the air rises to cross the mountains it is cooled and is able to hold less moisture so it drops in the form of rain or other precipitation. When the air reaches the other side where the lowland is it has already dropped it's moisture and this leaves very little to fall in the lowlands.

Why is rain different in different places?

Rainfall can vary in different places due to differences in atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and air pressure. These variations can result in different amounts of moisture in the air and different mechanisms for precipitation to occur, leading to varying types and amounts of rain in different regions. Geographic features like mountains and bodies of water can also influence rainfall patterns in specific areas.

Does it rain the same amount everywhere in the US?

no. some areas, like the desert, gets only1-5 inches a year while rain forests get more than 300. And the type of rain also varies. It rains in Seattle WA almost every day, something like 96% of the days of the year. BUT, most of the times the rain is a slight mist and only for a few hours. This is caused by the Mountains to the East of the city. The clouds bump up against the mountains and drops it moisture and then goes over them. The area on the East side of the mountains gets very little rain at all. Some places gets rain in the morning, for example and not the rest of the day.

Can mountains affect climate by creating rain shadows?

Yes, mountains can create rain shadows by blocking the passage of moist air, causing it to rise and release precipitation on one side (windward side) of the mountain. The leeward side, or rain shadow side, receives much less precipitation as the air descends and warms, leading to drier conditions. This can significantly influence the climate of the surrounding areas.

Do rain shadows blow in circular belts across Earth?

No, rain shadows are areas of decreased precipitation on the leeward side of mountains due to the blocking of moisture by the mountains. They do not blow in circular belts across the Earth; rather, they are localized phenomena influenced by the geography of the area.

How do mountains affect the temperature?

There is less rainfall on the lands beside the mountains. The mountains block rain. Also, clouds moving towards the lands rise to avoid the mountains, cooling the clouds even more. As cool clouds cannot carry as much water, the rain will start to fall on the mountains and not the land beside them. Thus, the lands beside the mountains hardly get rain and are dryer and hotter.

Why are highland areas cooler than lowland areas?

Highland areas are cooler than lowland areas because of their higher elevation. As altitude increases, the air becomes less dense, which reduces its ability to retain heat. This results in lower temperatures in highland areas compared to lowland areas at the same latitude.

In Europe the areas that are west of mountains receive?

In Europe, the areas that are west of the mountains receive more rainfall due to the prevailing westerly winds carrying moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. This leads to a wetter climate on the western side of the mountains and a drier climate on the eastern side, known as the rain shadow effect.
