The visible funnel of a tornado is composed of water droplets like an ordinary cloud, and so usually is the same color as the clouds that it extends from.

Not all tornadoes are gray, however. Depending on lighting some may appear white or black. Tornadoes can also be colored by soil that they lift and become gray, black, brown, tan, or even red.

Tornadoes are often dark because many pictures are taken when the tornado is lit from behind, so you essentially see its silhouette. Some tornadoes lift up massive quantities of dark colored soil.

Tornadoes may be dark for two reasons:

  1. A tornado may be lit from behind, causing it to appear dark as is the case for almost anything opaque.
  2. A tornadoes, especially a strong one, can lift large quantities of soil into the air. If the tornado is dark then the tornado will likely be dark as well.

There are a couple factors for the color of a tornado. First is lighting conditions, a tornado lit from behind will usually dark gray or black while on lit from the front will often be light gray or white. Tornadoes can also lift large amounts of soil into the air. When this happens the tornado takes on the color of this soil.

A tornado is made visible by a condensation funnel, a dust cloud, or a combination of the two. The funnel, being made of condensation, is much the same as an ordinary cloud. Its appearance depends largely on how the light hits it. If the funnel is back lit it will likely appear dark gray or black. A front lit funnel will likely appear light gray or even white.

In some cases the color of a tornado is largely due to the soil it picks up, and in many cases the soil is black.

Well, yes of course they have color, it just depends on the conditions surrounding the tornado. Depending light the funnel of a tornado may appear gray, black, or even white. A tornado may also be colored, gray, black, brown, or red by soil it picks up.

Because of lighting. Also because of the condensation in the cloud. A white tornado is because the sun is showing. A black tornado has very little sun showing.

Yes. Depending on lighting conditions and what the tornado is moving over, a tornado may appear black, gray, white, brown, or red.

Tornadoes form during very intense thunderstorms that are often more than 50,000 feet tall. Such a thick layer of clouds blocks out a large amount of sunlight.

What does a tornado clouds look like?

Is it possible to have 2 tornadoes at the same time?

There are different ways this can happen. Tornadoes often occur in outbreaks where several tornado producing thunderstorms can be active at the same time, as weather conditions are favorable for such storms to occur. What is happening in one storm does not necessarily affect another occurring at the same time, so there can be several tornadoes on the ground at once. These thunderstorms often produce tornadoes in succession in what is called a tornado family. In such cases a second tornado may form before the first one dissipates and the two can be seen together. Yet another phenomenon can occur when a large tornado spawns a smaller satellite tornado the circles it. In some cases the air movements inside a thunderstorm can become quite complex, and may produce several tornadoes at once rather than just one.Another phenomenon that can occur in some tornadoes, especially strong ones, is often mistaken for multiple tornadoes. Some tornadoes have multiple smaller vortices inside the main circulation. Under the right conditions this can lead to a single tornado having multiple funnels. This can make it look like one tornado is actually several.

What do tornadoes look like on radar screens?

Has there everbeen a cloudless tornado or hurricane?

No. Hurricanes are massive storm systems that require large amounts of moisture to form. If there is not enough moisture for clouds to form there can't possibly be a hurricane. Tornadoes form from thunderstorms and by definition must be in contact with both the cloud base and the ground. There is a different sort of phenomenon, however, called a dust devil. These are whirlwinds that often form on clear, sunny days. They are not tornadoes, but they look like them. Dust devils are much weaker than tornadoes and are usually harmless.

How does the surrounding look when a tornado is coming?

Tornadoes typically form in the rear half of a supercell. So tornadoes are often preceded by cloudiness rain, thunder, lightning, and sometimes hail. The clouds in a tornadic storm sometimes appear black or greenish.

Tornadoes do form in deserts, but very rarely. Deserts often see whirlwinds called dust devils. They look like tornadoes but are weaker and form on sunny days while tornadoes form from thunderstorms.

Does a gray suit black shirt and black tie go with a lime green dress?

I'd be wary about pairing the grey suit with black-on-black, a combo that I usually favor. Black and green (or grey and green, for that matter) work perfectly well together. Black and grey usually look good with anything, actually. Good Luck!
