Learn how to make crystals. This is a collection of easy crystal growing recipes, with photos of what the crystals look like and tips for how to make your crystals a success.

Sugar Crystals or Rock CandyAnne Helmenstine

Rock candy or sugar crystals are especially good to grow because you can eat the finished crystals! The basic recipe for these crystals is:

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 cup boiling water
You can add food coloring or flavoring to the liquid, if you want. It's easiest to grow these crystals on a thick string hanging from a pencil or knife into the solution. For best results, remove any crystals that aren't growing on your string.

Do igneous rocks have small crystals large crystals or no crystals?

Igneous rocks can have both small and large crystals, depending on how quickly they cool. If an igneous rock cools slowly beneath the Earth's surface, it can form large crystals, while rapid cooling at the Earth's surface or in an eruption can result in small or no visible crystals.

Are hand specimens of microcrystalline quartz single crystals or aggregates of crystals?

Hand specimens of microcrystalline quartz are typically aggregates of crystals rather than single crystals. Microcrystalline quartz is composed of small interlocking crystals that are too small to be individually distinguished without magnification.

How does the crystal sizes of igneous rocks indicate the rate of cooling and whether the rock is extrusive or intrusive?

Generally, large crystals represent slow cooling rates and small crystals represent fast cooling rates. Crystals need time to form and since extrusive rocks cool very quickly, they have very tiny crystals and some don't even have crystals because the rate of cooling was so fast that crystals didn't have time to nucleate. On the other hand, intrusive rocks cool rather slowly allowing crystals to grow.

What is the size of crystals in an igneous rock called?

The size of crystals in an igneous rock is called texture. Texture can range from fine-grained (small crystals) to coarse-grained (large crystals).

Is the faster a rock cools the larger the crystals?

Yes, the faster a rock cools, the smaller the crystals will be. When rocks cool quickly, there is less time for crystals to grow, resulting in finer-grained textures with smaller crystals. Conversely, slower cooling allows more time for crystals to grow, leading to larger crystal sizes.

Why does alum make big crystals?

It's not that only alum makes big crystals.. There are so many compounds that can make big crystals. Even Sodium Hydroxide makes very good and big crystals. For crystals you need a uniform arrangement of atoms in space. For big crystals all you need is patience. The slower is the crystallization process the bigger crystals are formed. What industries do is called seeding. They make a good concentrated solution of the compound whose crystals are needed and then they put a crystal of the same compound in the solution. The new crystals form and attach to the crystal making quick and big crystals.
