As you get closer to the equator the sunlight passes through less of earth's atmosphere than at high latitudes. The angle of the sun's descent toward the horizon is closer to the perpendicular, and for those two reasons, (a) the sun's light is refracted less at lower latitude, and (b) the sun "plunges" below the horizon at a steeper angle, therefore it gets dark quicker.

Or, as my first grade teacher used to say, the earth is "widest" at the equator, so the earth blocks the sun's light more the nearer you are to the equator.

The speed at which it gets dark is influenced by the tilt of the Earth's axis. Locations closer to the North Pole experience shorter days in winter due to the tilt, causing it to get darker quicker. Conversely, locations closer to the equator or South Pole have more consistent day length throughout the year.

Why is the south pole's atmosphere impacted more than the north pole's?

The south pole's atmosphere is impacted more than the north pole's due to the Antarctic ozone hole, which forms over Antarctica during the Southern Hemisphere's spring. This ozone hole leads to greater ozone depletion in the south pole's atmosphere compared to the north pole. Additionally, the south pole is more isolated and has less atmospheric mixing, allowing pollutants to build up more easily.
