When fossil fuels are burned a chemical reaction takes place. This chemical reaction produces energy, in the form of heat, which is used by an engine to produce motion. But a bi-product of this reaction is carbon dioxide which is a green house gas.

Green house gases cause the earth's temperature to rise by slowing the rate at which heat can leave the earth.

Fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) are used to generate electricity and to power vehicles. We are using more and more every day because:

  1. The world's population is increasing.
  2. Developing countries are raising their living standards, so more people want cars, fridges and TVs.
  3. Developed countries find they "need" more gadgets than ever before.
  4. More and more people "need" air conditioning. Is the world getting warmer?
