Does wood burn better than charcoal?

First of all, wood can be broken down into three elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. To create fire you need heat, fuel and oxygen. By providing the wood you have fuel and since it contains oxygen, you have that as well. By raising the heat of it enough, even in a vacuum you are eventually going to cause it to spontaneously combust before any of those elements melt. So in short wood cannot melt before it starts burning.

Why does charcoal burn longer and hotter than the wood that made it?

We work at a lab testing wood and charcoal burning stoves. Charcoal doesn't burn hotter than wood in a stove. That's why it's better for broiling not burning steaks. Charcoal is used in lots of places like African cities because it makes little smoke and keeps burning for a long time which is more convenient than wood that requires tending. Also charcoal can be made and sold by the rural poor to the urbanites who have more money. And charcoal is lighter than wood for transport. However, more than half of the energy in the wood is wasted when turning wood into charcoal! From an ecological perspective it's a lot better to burn wood cleanly. Charcoal is almost pure carbon ... no moisture, no extraneous chemicals. But don't forget, charcoal is a residue ... a lot of wood was burned to make it.

Is timber a fossil fuel?

No, it is not an example of a fossil fuel. Wood, although it is a renewable resource, is also not a renewable fuel source for the simple reason that use as a major fuel source would quickly outstrip our ability to replenish it. Evidence: the world wide destruction of rain forests and woodlands.

What is the best fuel additive?

My opinion is that Cerma Stm 3 is the best fuel additive. I use it on my pickup and I went from 17 to 20 mpg's. After you add it to the fuel you'll need to change your fuel filter because it does a really good job cleaning the gunk out. The website explains it in better detail than I can. There are a lot of reasons to use charcoal grills instead of gas grills. First of all, charcoal grills are much easier to clean and use than gas grills. Secondly, they are able to use a much wider array of fuels than gas grills. You can use everything from charcoal to actual wood in a charcoal grill. What you call a flame is vaporized fuel oxidizing. Vaporizing pure carbon, which is what charcoal (theoretically) is requires temperatures higher than anything you're likely to achieve.
