When CaO (lime) is in contact with water (moist soil), the ionic bond breaks -- it dissolves into Ca2+ and O2- ions. It is the O2- ions that will neutralize acids, which are characterized by providing H+ (or H3O+) ions. The chemical reaction is: 2H+ + O2---> H2O, which plants need and which is neutral. Ca2+will probably remain as ions, because the salts form in the chemical reaction (for example, CaSO4, CaCl2, or Ca(NO3)2) are still water soluble.

OK, then why not MgO or Al2O3? Beside that CaO is relative common and therefore cheap to mine (limestone is almost everywhere), it provides as a bonus, Ca, a mineral that the plant needs anyway. Al2O3 is out of the question, because it is insoluble in water to be any good. CaCO3, another abundant substance, is OK too, but that CO2 is a byproduct.

Example of the strongest basic oxide?

Calcium oxide (CaO) is often considered one of the strongest basic oxides. It forms a strong base when it reacts with water, producing hydroxide ions. This makes it highly alkaline and capable of neutralizing acids effectively.

Is quicklime a base or an acid?

Quicklime (calcium oxide) is considered a base. When quicklime reacts with water, it forms calcium hydroxide, which is an alkaline solution.

What is the word equation for extraction of calcium from calcium oxide by electrolysis?

The word equation for the extraction of calcium from calcium oxide by electrolysis is: Calcium oxide (solid) -> Calcium (liquid) + Oxygen gas.

Is calcium oxide a basic oxide?

Yes, Calcium oxide is an alkaline as when Calcium oxide reacts with water (H2O) it dissolves as it is a soluble metal oxide. The solution produced when this occurs is an alkaline solution. This proves that Calcium oxide is an alkaline

How much elemental Calcium is there in Calcium oxide?

There is no elemental calcium in calcium oxide. Calcium oxide is a compound made up of calcium and oxygen atoms bonded together. When calcium oxide reacts with water, it forms calcium hydroxide, which contains calcium ions but not elemental calcium.

Why is calcium oxide described as a base?

It reacts with acids, it dissolves exothermically in water to produce a basic solution.

What is the word equation for calcium plus iron oxide?

The word equation for calcium plus iron oxide is: calcium + iron oxide → calcium oxide + iron. In this reaction, calcium displaces iron in iron oxide to form calcium oxide and elemental iron. This type of reaction is known as a displacement reaction, where a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element in a compound.
