I think it mean that he face a tough challenge and it make his life worse like what Isannah said to him. Based on the words "an earth of brass", it mean that he had a bad experience.

It's a reference to the Book of Deuteronomy in The Bible, Chapter 28, verse 23, which tells of the curses (punishments) you receive for disobedience. Johnny disobeyed his master, Mr. Lapham, and is beginning to see how many ways he will pay for it.

"And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron."
