Nickel cadmium batteries may have advantages long ago before the newer batteries like nickel metal halide, lithium ion and now even new rechargeable battery technology become available.

It is now deem obsolete and also enviromentally unfriendly because of the cadmium.

On top of that nickel cadmium batteries are potentially corrosive when they become discharge and leak. It is actually quite easy for a nickel cadmium to leak since they are always made with a vent hole at the positive terminal.

Take a look at what a leaking nickel cadmium battery did to the internal electronics of this beautiful Hewlett Packard HP-21 calculator at this site =>

why is nickel important

I'll answer it if you'll give me 5 cents. J/K, nickel is one of the most abundant metals on the planet, and most of it lies at the earth's core. Nickel is also one of only three ferromagnetic elements (along with iron and cobalt) meaning a magnet will stick to it.

The fraction of global nickel production presently used for various applications is as follows: 46% for making nickel steels; 34% in nonferrous alloys and superalloys; 14% electroplating, and 6% into other uses.

Nickel is used in many specific and recognizable industrial and consumer products, including stainless steel, alnico magnets, coinage, rechargeable batteries, Electric Guitar strings, microphone capsules, and special alloys. It is also used for plating and as a green tint in glass. Nickel is preeminently an alloy metal, and its chief use is in the nickel steels and nickel cast irons, of which there are many varieties. It is also widely used in many other alloys, such as nickel brasses and bronzes, and alloys with copper, chromium, aluminium, lead, cobalt, silver, and gold.
