Oxygen is important cells as without oxygen the human body is unable to release enough energy to support life. In theory any other element in the oxygen-group on the Periodic Table can be used to release energy but because other elements in that group are not easily turned into gases they can't used.

Last comment; Oxygen is not important for blood; its important for the blood cells themselves and other cells. Blood and blood cells are very different.
