The body of water that surrounds the Great Barrier Reef is the Coral Sea.
A low energy coast is typically characterized by gentle waves, minimal wave activity, and sediment accumulation. These coasts usually have wide beaches and are not prone to erosion or significant wave action. An example of a low energy coast is a bay or a sheltered estuary.
A reef-like ridge of rock is called a "barrier reef." These are found offshore and run parallel to the coastline, providing a protective barrier from the open ocean.
When going to a marine biome, pack essentials such as reef-safe sunscreen, snorkeling gear, water shoes, a reusable water bottle, a rash guard for sun protection, and a dry bag to keep your belongings dry. Be mindful of leaving no trace by using biodegradable products and avoiding single-use plastics. Make sure to also pack any necessary medications, a first aid kit, and appropriate clothing for the activities you plan to do.
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second largest in the world, and it passes through Mexico, Belize, and Honduras. The SECOND largest coral reef is located in the Yucatan waters near Mexico. In the early 1980s, the pristine, beach-girdled Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula was marked by little more than a few fishing villages. There was a hotel here and a hammock there, but not much of an effort to identify their position, nor much infrastructure to support them. But just as it did for Cancún in the early 1970s, Mexico's government tourism development agency decided to put a name to this beautiful face, and the Riviera Maya was born. And soon enough, a highway was built parallel to the coast, linking these sun-drenched towns and villages to the Cancúnairport.Sure, the name rings of romanticized marketing conceit, but Riviera Maya is indeed an ideal description of the magic carpet of sand that unrolls virtually unbroken for 81 miles south of Cancún.The Riviera Maya starts in Puerto Morelos, one of the coast's last genuine fishing villages, 12 miles south of the Cancúnairport. The beach here is not as impressive as those deeper into the region -- the salt-and-pepper shoreline doesn't glisten quite as brightly, and less-than translucent seas have a blanket of turtle grass underfoot. But there are advantages to being based in Puerto Morelos. Your airport transfer is barely 20 minutes, and he proximity of Cancún makes an evening out on the town a realistic option. Nightlife in laid-back Puerto Morelos may be a tad scruffy, but it's fun for an evening or two. Better still, the barrier reef -- the world's second-longest -- lies less than a mile offshore and it's a designated marine reserve along this section of Riviera Maya. The beaches are quiet and uncrowded.
sea weeds, sea grass
The Great Barrier Reef is a marine biome, so the only grass that grows there is seagrass, which is not a true grass. There are 15 known species of seagrass in the Great Barrier Reef.

Cowboys loved a colorful phrase! A shoal is a reef. Cowboys changed the term to mean idling lazily about, as if delayed by a reef on your journey.
Some examples of plants that live in a coral reef are algae, zooaxenthella, sea grasses, othella, turtle grass, shoal grass, and manatee grass.
The take hundreds of years to develop into a huge reef.
The one place I'm am thinking of that reminds me of a coral reef is Bryce Canyon National Park, so I would say a canyon/desert biome.
Coral Reef
A coral REEF (the biome made of corals) shows no symmetry.
A reef is an underwater protrusion. Some synonyms for a reef would include a bank, as in a sand bank. Another type of reef could be an underwater ridge. You might hear someone say a shoal. An unusual synonym would be a skerry.
